  • Dickson Mounds Museum – This museum and birthplace of modern archaeology located near Lewistown is the 1927 exploration site of a Native American burial ground.
  • Easley Pioneer Museum – Located in Ipava adjacent to Riverside Park can be found a one room country school, the remains of a pioneer cabin, and an exhibit of World War II Camp Ellis.
  • Edgar Lee Masters’ Boyhood Home – Masters is best known for his poetry collection Spoon River Anthology which was inspired by the scenery and people of this area of Illinois in the early 20th Century.
  • Ellisville Post Office Museum – In Ellisville and operated by the Ellisville Restoration Organization
  • Harold Kee Welch Memorial Gallery – In Smithfield find the paintings, carvings, murals and sculptures by this Spoon River Country native son.
  • Lewistown Courthouse – This was the site of Abraham Lincoln’s Return to the Fountain speech.
  • Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum – Lewistown pays homage to the Narrow Gauge Railway. The Narrow Gauge connected western Illinois and carried everything from mail, to coal to passengers.
  • Rasmussen Blacksmith Shop and Museum – Actual smithies are on hand to demonstrate the art of forging iron into horseshoes and other useful items.
  • Red Brick School Community Center – This is the home of Bill Swango’s Wildlife Art Gallery. Swango shows pieces made from clay and solid walnut.

The Great Outdoors

The Illinois River Country Nature Trail’s Canton Loop is a must see and do – whatever you like to do outside. Canton is a gateway city to this loop so you are closer than you think to wildlife of all shapes and sizes.

  • Ellisville Opera House – Fully restored and operational opera house in Ellisville and home of the Little Rascals Theater Troupe.
  • Fulton County Playhouse – Established in 1964 presents a variety of productions for residents and visitors alike.
  • Hickory Ridge Coffee House – Located at the Dickson Mounds Museum hosts noted folk musicians throughout the year and on the third Saturday of each month presents an open mic night complete with desserts and coffee.
  • Hilda’s Pantry – Lewistown is the home to Hilda’s and bluegrass music.
  • Spoon River College Drama Department – See tomorrow’s stars today on the stage at Taylor Hall.
